MARCO KOEPPEL & CARLOS MARTINEZ |
The design of the schlafhaus is a reflection of the form and function of a traditional asturian "Horreo" (or granary). You enter the structure from the bottom, up a Samba staircase in the centre. Because of an electric snap mechanism mounted on the staircase the elyptoid is completely lockable and disconnected from the earth. The layout of the four rooms is organised as a "consecutive system" in an oval pattern. Each room has a function: the outside wall with windows, space in the "hull" for daily accessories, the two side walls function as doors and the back wall is for pictures or light (colours). The two sleeping rooms are illuminated with sunlight that is diverted by a mirror on each main wall. The bed is shoved into the womb-like summit of this "dreamship" and the extra space can be used for book shelves, toys, etc. The floor contains space for clothing, shoes and other accessories. A generous bathroom is located opposite from the entrance and is lit by two panoramic windows. All of the windows mimic the roundness of the exterior surface. |
